Kilbarry Forest

Kilbarry wood is set on a wooded plateau situated between the river valleys of the Bride and Blackwater. It consists of 30 hectares mixed broadleaved woodland with stands of mature Oak and Beech and occasional Ash, Birch and Rowan trees along with Scots Pine and Larch. The shrub layer consists of Holly, Elder and Bramble, whilst the ground layer is dominated by Great Wood Rush, Wood Sorrell, Wood Sedge and many species of fern. There is a spectacular carpet of bluebells and foxgloves to be seen in the Spring and Summer months. A number of viewing platforms on the boundary, offer wonderful views across the valleys to the Nagle, Comeragh, Galty and Knockmealdown mountains. Walk: There are two looped walking trails in Kilbarry, the Blue Route (1.5km, 30 mins, moderate) and the Red Route (2.5km, 40 mins, moderate) that both guide the visitor around this community woodland that the locals are so proud of. Explore nature: Immerse in the rich diversity of plant, animal and bird life. Long heather and Moor grasses are abundant on the slopes, while rock faces are covered with mosses, lichens and primitive plants including the rare Fox’s Cabbage.
