Dromilihy Forest

Dromillihy wood sits on a sandstone ridge that rises to 80m above the N71, the main West Cork road. The wood once formed part of the Morris estate, they were one of the principal landowners in the barony of East and West Carbery from the late 1600’s. There are a number of old houses in the area that are associated with the family, including nearby Castle Salem and Cellmount, a wall of which is still apparent within the forest. It is bounded by the Roury River on the eastern side. Historically, mill races off this river would have powered local businesses such as a tuck mill and a corn mill. This is a compact woodland that is very accessible offering welcome respite for weary road travelers and locals alike. Enjoy. Walk: The Cellmount Loop (1.6km, 40 mins, moderate) is a great way to explore Dromillihy. There are a number of information points along the way to add to the experience and to give visitors a greater understanding of the ecology and historical features to be found. Explore nature: It is an old woodland site meaning that it has been consistently wooded since the 1830's. There are many native species present in the understorey and in the natural field layer and flora. The display of bluebells carpeting the woodland floor is a sight to behold from April to early summer.
